Great design is what we're all about here.We believe it has the power to put smiles on our faces and bring joy to our homes - after all, who wouldn't love to be surrounded by beautiful furniture pieces that make our lives a tad simpler than what they are?
In our opinion, Arne Jacobsen's Egg Chair truly personifies great design in many ways - has loads of personality, offers exceptional comfort, has longevity and, of course, is stunningly sculptural.
Today, we’ll be exploring the compelling history and craftsmanship of this forever furniture piece.
Making History
The Egg Chair was originally designed in 1958 for the lobby of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The first skyscraper ever in the city, the hotel was Jacobsen's largest commission to date. He created everything in it, from the façade to the furniture, cutlery and lighting.
The Egg Chair's curvy form was quite unusual for its time and it came about because of an equally unusual reason - Jacobsen wanted the interior of the hotel to directly contrast the modernist exterior. Brilliant, isn’t it?
The soft, organic lines of the Egg Chair were to provide a refuge from the harsh steel and glass. When first exhibited, the Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair became something of a landmark in modern furniture design.
The groundbreaking Egg Chair was made using new construction methods and new materials - a foam shell covered in upholstery. This opened up a whole new world of possibilities for furniture designers back then!
Craftsmanship in Action
The Egg Chair has been produced ever since its release, right up to today. They're expertly crafted using only the finest quality materials. Every chair is stitched by hand using a distinctive method. Double the stitches are needed to perfect the leather Egg Chair when compared to the fabric version.
Even though it’s an awfully time consuming process, this is exactly the type of attention to detail and care that gives the Egg Chair its elegant look and feel. Besides, every Egg Chair leather has a timeless quality that simply cannot be overlooked. You may feel it, see it and even smell it.
And because leather matures gorgeously, a fine leather Egg Chair will only get better as ages. Lovely! These true heirloom furniture pieces may surely be passed down from generation to generation, each time becoming much more coveted than the last.
