The Arco Lamp: When Innovation Succeeds

It's very interesting how a little idea can turn into something great. A vision, an image, a thought, a wish, or an object can activate inspiration and open the way for new creations that no one has ever thought of before.

The Arco lamp can be considered a good example of that. At the time it made its appearance on the market in 1962, this model from the Castiglioni brothers represented a novelty for several reasons and in many ways. It was an interesting, attractive lamp, something never-seen-before, that captured the attention of critics and the general public. Shortly after its release, it became a best-seller.

The Mid-Century Modern style is known for giving great importance to the practical and useful functional aspects that any fixture or piece of furniture can provide. For this reason, the Castiglioni brothers knew that to create a truly successful lamp they had to go in another direction that would break the usual patterns of this type of design.

The idea that sparked the concept of the Arco lamp was the shape of the lampposts that one could normally see on the streets at that time in Italy. The creators thought that if they applied that idea of the curved arm holding the reflector head, they could create something that looked and worked amazingly well.

From The Theory to The Practice

The idea worked better than expected. The arc-shaped telescopic metal arm up to 90 inches high was the key piece that embodied an imposing floor lamp, which could deliver overhead light practically and powerfully.

This quickly made it the main ally of people who worked doing manual tasks for which they needed a great concentration of light focused on the table, desk, or workshop.

The main technical advantage was that the user could move around the reflector head without fear of tripping over the base, which can be up to two meters away from it. Also, the light can be redirected by simply adjusting the direction the reflector is pointing.

On the other hand, the aesthetic aspects of the piece also won the people's applause. It was an elegant, striking lamp, with a very particular style that would influence many other designers. Other similar models began to appear soon after.

Currently, the popularity of the piece is so great that there are even options such as the Arco Lamp replica from Manhattan Home Design. During the design process, the Castiglioni discovered that the weight and shape of the lamp would make it difficult to keep it upright. They needed to give it enough firmness and stability so that it could be used without problems.

It was then that they decided to add the fabulous solid Carrara marble base. In the first place, they had considered putting a concrete base on it. However, they decided that it was a very rustic material, simple, and without any extraordinary aesthetic value.

On the other hand, marble is known in the world of architecture and design for having been a material used in the great works of antiquity and classical art, including the sculptures of Michelangelo. Currently, even the Arco lamp reproduction faithfully respects this component that became one of the most relevant and charming points of this masterpiece.
