Posted by Gabriela Martinez on Nov 25th 2020

It is no secret that, from time to time, a specific artist creates a magical piece that remains in our minds for years. These types of artists are the ones capable of building a timeless and striking appearance, so memorable that nobody forgets and decides to make them part of history.

Notable pieces like an Egg chair are a great example of this action. This magnificent chair is full of an incomparable personality because it has to offer small but important details that when you add them up it makes it what it is. Features such as its structure, its rare but elegant curved shape, its height, and more gave the furniture its longevity.

But who is responsible for the amazing creation of the Egg Chair?

We all know that just "Behind every great man is a great woman", behind timeless furniture like the one mentioned, there is a great designer, and in this case, we are talking about the one and only Arne Jacobsen.

Arne Jacobsen was an architect and designer, better recognized for his contributions to the Functionalist movement.

He was born in Copenhagen and assisted to the School of Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. By still being at school, he had the opportunity to submit a chair design to the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes and was awarded a silver medal.

Jacobsen is part of the great minds from mid-century modern and had his early influences like Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Walter Gropius. His influences can see reflected in its design just like for the lobby and reception areas of Copenhagen’s Royal Hotel.

How the Egg chair was first created?

The history behind the Egg chair is related to the lobby and reception areas of Copenhagen’s Royal Hotel. Jacobsen won the opportunity to be in charge of the design creation of almost all aspects, including the facade, the lighting, and most important; the furnishing.

One of the pieces he implemented in the aforementioned lobby was the one and only Egg chair. The tunning pieces leave everyone with an open mouth for their incredible and at that time revolutionized look.

The Egg chair leather was one of the triumphs of the whole project he created, it created a perfect contrast with the chair form and the rest of the building structure which was full of horizontal and vertical lines.

An interesting fact about this chair is that Jacobsen was the first furniture designer that used a foam inner shell underneath the upholstery. Also, people tend to attribute Jacobsen’s success with a specific extra ability he has, which was to be a sculptor. Since he had this ability he tried to find the shell’s ideal shape to provide privacy in open-concept or public areas.
