The Egg chair is always the focal point every time it is placed and today we are going to show you some features of why people like this chair so much.

Today I have decided to talk about this mid-century icon as I remember nostalgically the first time I saw this chair on television, it is almost incredible how striking and remarkable they are. I remember sitting on my grandfather's sofa watching a very retro movie and I saw how the evil protagonist prowled and turned on top of it, it gave him an elegance and air of superiority quite in line with the character, and it was this power that left a mark in me and today it has made me share with the Manhattan Home Design audience a couple of interesting facts about the design, construction of the chair and the designer artist. Let us begin!

The Egg chair curved edges are made on purpose

Did you know the curvaceous Egg Chair was specifically designed by Arne Jacobsen to cradle the body and offer privacy? Later on, it also became the seat of choice for bosses in movies. This is what I meant in the previous paragraph, about the special vibe it offers to the user.

Jacobsen (the Egg chair creator), a Danish architect, designed the Egg Chair for the SAS Royal Hotel (shown below), before designing the building himself, which became the first skyscraper ever in Copenhagen. The second interesting fact comes here because he was not only handling the chair or furniture design of the building he was in charge of the whole art within the building, so every detail, including the edges of the fabulous chair, was a big deal for him.

The Egg Chair is an ergonomic mid-century modern model

According to Emily Orr, assistant curator of modern American design at the celebrated Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in Manhattan, the shape “harks back to early wing chairs.” In the mid 20th century, there was a desire to design ergonomic chairs that responded to the body. So This is when the egg chair comes to the fore, providing the best comfort and structure to protect your back from future pains or complications.

The Egg chair has modern upholstery

Another factor that caused and still causes so much attraction is that unlike overstuffed Victorian wing chairs, the Jacobsen Egg Chair is modern and sleek. It also provides users with comfort and a sense of privacy, this is to the imitation of the human arms in the chair structure. A very thoughtful design from a mastermind!

The upholstered Egg Chair amazed critics, who identified Jacobsen’s masterpiece with the geometric shapes that were pretty popular back then. He decided to cover those shapes with a very elegant fabric red material which was very certain because this color was one of the reasons why everyone felt empowered and confident when sitting on the chair.
