Brief History
Prone to experimenting, Saarinen set out in 1955 to clean up “the slum of legs” under the typical rectangular dining tables in America.No tiny task! After careful research and testing, he came up with the first pedestal table ever.The basic premise of the Tulip Table reduced a table’s traditional four legs to an aerodynamic pedestal.
To achieve the structure, Saarinen ultimately landed on a cast aluminum base that attaches to the tabletop.He also created Tulip Chairs to complement the tables. Due to its catchy name and innovation, the entire tulip collection was an instant hit back then.
