Furniture Design Icon - The Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair
Posted by Maureen on Oct 29th 2020
Did you know the Egg Chair was originally designed for use in the Royal Copenhagen SAS hotel in Denmark? Amazing! In this project, prolific figure Arne Jacobsen designed everything that came under the ‘interior design’ label - from furniture to textiles to cutlery.
Sadly, to this day most of his work has been replaced by corporate fabrics and furniture, and only one room has been kept to original design. Room number 606 still has its original blue walls, blue furniture, including the Egg Chair, and all of its wooden paneling is still present.
Believe or not, the hotel room is still available for booking should you ever feel like embracing a real piece of Danish design history. Of course, you would be following many esteemed guests such as The Beatles, the Dalai Lama, and even N. Madela. WOW!
Ahead of its Time
The Egg Chair was cleverly constructed and was one of Jacobsen’s most impressive creations, developed using an innovative technique for its time. It has been in production ever since its release! It contains a shell made of polyurethane foam, that’s padded with foam and an outer layer of either leather or fabric.
The base consists of a satin chromed, swivel center of welded steel tubing, which is connected to an aluminium star swivel base. This creates a beautiful juxtaposition to the curves of the leather Egg Chair. Yet, itsdistinctive and unique design doesn’t detract from its ergonomics.
It provides chair users with an utterly comfortable sitting experience, while affording a degree of privacy. This was perfect for the busy waiting room and reception area of the SAS hotel way back then.
Timeless Danish Icon
Even though Arne Jacobsen designed this timeless beauty especially to be used in the hotel, its popularity exponentially increased. It called for a small run of “special edition” Egg Chairs to be produced shortly after the hotel’s opening.
In order to maintain its exclusivity, each chair released had a huge price tag of $60,000 back in 1958, while amounting to a whopping $520,000 today. Six decades later, the Egg Chair is the most popular chair for homeowners and interior designers across the globe. It became a Danish icon!
With its masculine size and femenine curves, it’s a unique addition to any space. Being influenced by modernists Le Corbusier and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Jacobsen’s creation lends to a modernist space. Being a sculpture itself, the Egg Chair can stand on its own in a minimalist interior.

Given the rarity of the Egg Chair Arne Jacobsen, the price to purchase one varies enormously. Generally, the price will depend on originality, date of production, provenance, condition, color and whether or not it is stamped underneath. The vintage pieces go from $6000 to $32,000.
New ones go for $8,000! These are the things to consider when purchasing a genuine Egg Chair, whether vintage or new. As always, to prevent buying an imitation of poor quality, always go for reputable furniture replica retailers like ourselves. Ours is inspired by Jacobsen's original design.
