LC2 Chair: One Of The Most Iconic Le Corbusier’s Creations

Posted by Gabriela Martinez on Oct 5th 2020

Know the history behind the LC2 chair and its creator; Le Corbusier.

A bit of Le Corbusier’s life

Le Corbusier was a Swiss-French architect and designer -among other professions- which is recognized for its contributions in Modern architecture. He dedicated his career to improving the living conditions of densely populated cities.

He was in charge of urban planning, which is a “technical and political process that is focused on the development and design of land use and the built environment”. This was one of his big contributions due to the magnitude of the project. Urban planning includes the creation of an optimized environment that involves things like; air, water, and the infrastructure passing into and out of urban areas, such as transportation and communications.

Architecture is the masterly, correct, and magnificent play of masses brought together in light. Our eyes are made to see forms in light: light and shade reveal these forms.

Le Corbusier.

He is also remembered as a controversial figure due to its political thoughts and failure of his collective living projects, resulting in some non-optimal building or project’s recreation.

Affortunely that wasn’t directly related to its furniture pieces.

LC2 chair the modern piece that still likes

Although the Le Corbusier chair was made in 1928, still steals the people’s attention.

The Lc2 chair was presented for the first time at the Salon d'Automne in Paris, the mind behind its creation was not only Le Corbusier, in fact, two other architects were involved; Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret (Le Corbusier's cousin). An interesting fact about it is that thanks to these two architects Le Corbusier started its involvement with furniture design.

LC2 Chair design

Le Corbusier applied his motto while working with its furniture collection, which was based on putting the human needs at the center of the designs. By following this motto gave life to the LC2 Petit Modele Armchair which is perfectly fittable to the resting purpose they have in mind.

The LC2 chair was a redesigning result of the English armchair from the 19th century. The designer’s objective was to create a comfortable chair that expresses a kind of welcoming to the customer. If you take a look at the chair design you can realize that the structure is avoiding any type of ornamental features or bourgeois forms, that’s because he sticks to the minimalistic concepts of functionality and simplicity, resulting in a refined and pure armchair.

LC2 chair features

This midcentury chair is very recognized for its attractive and flashy steel chrome coated frame. It is basically a “base grate and three tubular steel profiles with a circular cross-section”. The attractive frame is made by only one tube which involves the whole chair.

Regarding the cushions, the LC2 chair has five cushions in total that are made of multi-density composite foam resulting in the greatest place to sit and forget about the problems of the day. I mean, just take a look at its shapes and comfy cushions, don’t you want to sit on it?
