Many people think that mid-century modern is just a style or a way to arrange furniture and it doesn't, it’s so much more than that! Mid-century modern is an entire movement that was born with the Bauhaus architects and designers who migrated to America due to the economic changes in Germany after the Second World War started the design movement known as Mid-Century Modern.
The Mid-century movement is recognized for having the most functional and visual aesthetic layout designs. This style can seem like a timeless way to decorate places because even though many years have passed, they still have a prominent role in our culture.
Pieces like the Womb chair, the Florence Knoll sofa, and the Egg chair are part of the elements that people are still obsessed with, that is why today we have created a list of movies which are famous not only for their good history or the actors within them but because of the beautiful scenery that it has, within its elements; the furniture.
Here are some of our favorite films, from old goodies to recent ones, where midcentury and modern style play the main role.
The Moon is Blue (1953)
The Moon Is Blue is an American romantic comedy film produced and directed by Otto Preminger and starring William Holden, David Niven, and Maggie McNamara.
This film is based on a “young woman who knows an architect on the observation deck of the Empire State Building and quickly turns his life upside down”
As we mentioned in this film the main character is an architect so you may know what to wait for in the scenes. The architect's apartment is the whole dream of any mid-century modern fanatic, a gorgeously sleek and minimalist bachelor floor with numerous hallmarks of the style, including one of today’s blog stars the Saarinen Womb chair.
We should mention that one of the most used lounge chairs in this kind of movie, where expressing the love for architecture is one of the objectives, is the Womb chair.
The Womb Chair was made by Saarinen and is a beauty featuring precisely shaped fiberglass frames and high-density memory foam trim wrapped in premium wool upholstery.
This original design has revolutionized the furniture industry so much so that is a recurrent element in living rooms, offices, and even movies like the aforementioned.
The Incredibles (2004)
Saarinen was also involved in this film, although it is a familiar animated movie it has so much story and architecture find behind it that will explode your mind.
This movie shows different stages where you can find a lot of influences not only from Saireene but also from Knoll.
A great example of this could be the lairs of the curvy villains that are found in the middle of the film or the decoration and entrance of the house of Edna; the protagonist fashion designer.
Other movies you can watch:
A Star is Born (1954)
North By Northwest (1959)
Carol (2015)
