The Shell Chair: The Precise Representation of Danish Furniture
Posted by Gabriela Martinez on Dec 16th 2020
Today's blog will focus on Danish furniture, yes, those particular pieces that evoke aerodynamics and art while being functional and aesthetic. When it comes to Danish furniture it is difficult not to think of one of the pioneers and greatest exponents of this type of design, which is only one Hans J. Wegner.
Hans J was an iconic artist, famous in post-war Scandinavian design who made classic pieces like The Wishbone Chair, Peacock Chair, Round Chair, and last but not least; the Shell chair. Hans's pieces are recognized worldwide, although he is Danish, for unifying expressive aesthetics; functionalism, and Danish craftsmanship.
It is interesting to expose Hans's background before describing the design of the shell chair deeper because when you know a little more about the life and challenges that a designer has lived, in a certain way you can better appreciate and understand what he means through his art works. So let's start with a brief background.
Hans trained as a cabinetmaker at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, he is also related to other famous designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Børge Mogensen, Finn Juhl, and Poul Kjaerholm, who are renowned in the Scandinavian style.
During his career, he was able to create over 1000 designs, quite a large number, right?
The interesting or sad thing is that only more than 150 designs were made on the market and they are still manufactured today. In addition to this, as he was one of the most productive furniture manufacturers of the generation, he had a massive influence in creating the standards of what we call Scandinavian. So whenever you see a Scandinavian design, that model may have been inspired by some of the characteristics of Hans' furniture.
The Shell chair as a representation of his legacy
It is not a secret for anyone that every designer, like singers, architects and any other artist, has a project that represents them because for some particular reason with that project they caused a greater impact on people or clients, in this case.
Hans does not escape this theory, since one of the projects for which he is best known is the beautiful and sophisticated Shell chair. Let's see in detail how is its structure and the materials it has.
Note: it should be noted that the chair that we will see below is a replica of Manhattan Home Design, so if you see images or descriptions related to this chair in future posts, the features may vary from site to site.
