The Womb Chair: Important Facts You Need To Know About This Iconic Piece!

The Womb Chair was a Florence Knoll requirement creation

Although this chair was designed by the one and only Eero Saarinen a Finish-American designer, he was requested to do it, but how he was requested? Well, back in those days he was working with one of the big figures of the furniture design industry; the one and only Florence Knoll.

In 1946, just after a short meeting with Florence Knoll at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, the Saarinen inspiration comes to life. Back then, Knoll told him that she needed a chair that she might simply “sit in sideways or any other way she wanted”, tired of uncomfortable lounge chairs that everyone had back in the days and she asked a basket full of pillows dream-chair and Eero come with what we now know as the Womb chair.

Saarinen then proceeded to work on the primary version of the piece by taking a modern’s womb as inspiration. Why? basically, because he felt that not many people had been comfy in their lives since they left their mother’s womb.
