Behind this incredible piece exists a lot of interesting facts and information related to its history that we are sure you would want to read even after have made your purchase.

So, let’s introduce you to the main facts about the Womb chair!

Creation of the Womb chair

The Womb chair was originally designed by Eero Saarinen, he was one of the father’s designers of the mid-century modern movement. Saarinen is worldwide known for the Womb chair or how some people called the Model No. 7.

Another related fact to the womb chair creation is that most people don’t know but Saarinen was influenced by the one and only Florence Knoll, who at that time was his boss and icon design, who also challenge him to create a piece that “she could curl up in”.

At that time Eero wanted to start in the field of chairs and create striking pieces that offered the user a comfortable experience, but that these were not comfortable because of their cushions but because of their structure. That’s why Florence challenge him to create what we call now the Womb chair.

The Womb chair used to be presented in three dimensions

The womb chair wasn’t presented in a standard size, it used to be sold in three dimensions which are:

  • A large Womb Chair 35 1/2″ tall with a seat height of 16″ and arm height of 20 1/2″, with a large ottoman 16″ tall.
  • A medium Womb Chair: 31 1/4″ tall with a seat height of 15″ and arm height of 18″, with a medium Ottoman 14 1/2″ tall.
  • A small Womb Chair 27 1/4″ H tall with a seat height of 14 1/2″ and arm height of 17″. This small Womb Chair didn’t come with a small ottoman.

Why it is called the Womb chair?

This is perhaps the most frequently asked question about this chair, and the reason is quite simple. The womb chair is so named because days before the exhibition of the chair Eero and his wife were gathered with few guests in their house, it should be noted that at that time Eero's wife was pregnant, so when Eero saw his pregnant wife sitting so comfortably in that chair, it seemed perfect to bless it with the name of “the womb chair”.
