The Womb chair is without a doubt one of the most iconic pieces that Eero Saarinen produced. Today we will describe briefly its history, structure, and we will expose the reason why the business owners are including this piece in their designs. Let us begin!

The Womb Chair history

Eero Saarinen was a Danish designer who worked in the creative direction of one of the largest furniture companies in the mid-’50s. In his works, you can see numerous works for the Knoll company that were participants in the success and renown of said company. One of the pieces that made Knoll's reputation take-off was the iconic Womb chair.

The Womb chair was created in 1946 at the request of his colleague and boss; Florence Knoll. Florence noted in a meeting with Sarineen at the Cranbrook Academy of Art that she was fed up with the conventional long and narrow chairs, so she textually asked him:

"I told Eero I was sick and tired of the one-dimensional chair ... long and narrow", "I want a chair that I can sit on my side or however I want to sit. Florence Knoll.

After this meeting, Sarineen compiled the details that Florence shared, and along with her ability to generate ergonomic and beautiful structures, created the now adored Womb chair. This chair was comfortable for the public in different test angles and positions. It became recognized worldwide due to its curved appearance with delicate lines and shape that generates a feeling of privacy and security.

"It was designed on the theory that a great many people have never really felt comfortable and safe since leaving the womb," Saarinen said.

The Womb Chair description

This particular chair is considered an icon in the mid-century style because its structures required certain innovative techniques and materials for its time. This emerged after long months of experimenting with new techniques and materials extracted from the shipbuilding industry. These techniques allowed Sarineen to create the chair from a single piece of material, which made the chair not only beautiful and ergonomic but also optimal in construction.

In addition to its novel appearance, the Womb Chair is also innovative from a structural perspective. After experimenting with new techniques and materials drawn from the shipbuilding industry, Saarinen was able to build the chair from a single piece of material. Being a fiberglass frame and memory foam trim wrapped in soft wool upholstery over a steel frame with a polished chrome finish, it combines the simplicity of form with true comfort!

Why do business owners want the Womb chair in their designs?

As you can see, the structure of the Womb chair is very optimal and striking, these are the first factors why this type of people want to include it in their offices.

The Womb chair is not just elegant, it is also fashionable to behold. It looks amazing in a waiting room, hall, or conference room. Basically, its versatility is the reason why people love this chair.
